The Basics with a Focus on Centering w/ Jessica Bull, $35

July 31st, 2010 12:00-3:00pm

Leslie Manning centering a piece of clay at the studio.

Centering: the first step, the hardest step.  This workshop is NOT just for beginners.  This workshop is for beginner to intermediate potters who are still having trouble centering and throwing consistently. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?  While centering sometimes comes easily, it's hard to learn to center well enough that you can center a piece of clay every time.

This workshop will go over the basic steps of wheel throwing, but will spend the majority of the 3 hour class focusing on centering.  It will start with a basic throwing demonstration which will be followed by in-class throwing time.

Note that this workshop is going to focus on the act of throwing and less on the product.  While you will be able to finish your pieces during the workshop, keep in mind that the workshop is about learning to throw successfully and consistantly, and less about finishing the pieces.  Every piece is a practice piece!

This workshop is B.Y.O.C. (Bring Your Own Clay) and does not include firing or glazing.  It will be very intensive, so bring some extra energy and an open mind.  Since it's a 3 hour workshop, be sure to bring a snack or something to drink if you think you'll get hungry!  Bringing a towel is also a smart move.

No prior experience is required. Demonstrations, group discussions and one-to-one attention will be given to each student.  If you don't have tools or clay, out store will have all materials necessary available!

What to bring: Clay, tools, small towel

Optional, but recommended: bats, bat pins
