Handbuilding Classes

"I am a ceramic artist working and teaching at Creative Clay Studios in Alexandria, VA.

After teaching high school history for over a decade, I decided to change directions and explore my childhood passion for ceramics. While I began on the wheel, I am currently playing with hand-building. My favorite pieces merge form and function, artfully designed objects that can be used in everyday life."

Liz came to Creative Clay a few years ago and began wheel throwing classes with a lot of enthusiasm, progressing quickly and enjoying it immensely.  While skiing, she injured her wrist and was crestfallen that she would not be able to throw for a time while it healed.  This grew to be a lucky accident.

Gail Adkisson suggested that she try hand building; Liz enrolled in a class with Annette Hansen and loved it.  She quickly started to develop her own style.  She was soon selling her work at shows and galleries.

She entered her first show at the October 2007 Mid-Atlantic Clay Conference and her Tree Stump Salt and Pepper Shakers won Best Hand Built Form.

In a short time she was also mixing glazes and firing a kiln she shares with a fellow artist at Creative Clay.  When Annette, our hand building instructor, moved to Tennessee we asked Liz if she would join our teaching staff.  She agreed and has been a pleasure to work with, bringing great teaching skills from her prior experience.  Her students all enjoy her style and contagious love of clay.
