Surface design, images and decoration - a workshop combining decorative demonstrations with participation.

New Zealand potter and ceramic artist Brian Gartside will be here at Creative Clay to share his amazing surface decoration expertise with us.  One look at his work will show you why we are excited to have him.  He insists that no previous knowledge is necessary - only a willingness to experiment and try a variety visual techniques.

We will start with natural forms and shapes - ideas and images will be created.  Brian will help us to adapt, simplify, and transform the images to our personal tastes.  He will introduce us to simple and effective ways to implement these images on clay and ceramic surfaces.  He will also teach us how to use simple texture and glaze mixes to create decorative and sculptural surface images.

What to bring: A plain surfaced bisqued pot (preferably spherical or cube), thick paper, scissors or a utility knife, and broad masking tape, pencil and note paper or notebook.  Also bring along a collection of images of your own pottery or work that you admire, along with any favorite images.  Check out Brian's website!
