Horsehair Technique
Sunday, June 8, 2008
10:00am - 4:00pm
$45 / 50
This is an opportunity to learn the technique and take it home with you to
reproduce on your own.
Bring your bisque fired pots and learn how to produce distinct pottery with
horsehair and iron fuming effects. Ideally, your leather hard pots should
be sprayed or brushed with terra sigliata* and burnished; then fired to cone 08.
This will give your pot the ultimate finish!
The pots will be placed into a hot kiln and brought to the correct
temperature. They will then be pulled from the kiln, and you will lay horsehair
onto your pot making patterns and swirls with your personal flair.
Cost of workshop will include the firing of two pieces of bisque fired
pottery, no larger than 8" tall by 5" wide. Additional pieces of that
size will be fired for an additional $10 charge.
Maximum 8 participants
What to Bring: Your pots, lunch and a drink.
*There are lots of recipes for Terra Sig. We are going to
add mason stains to our Terra Sig and have several colored horsehair pots!
If we come to the 'right' formula, we'll send it to you before the workshop.
Here's one:
Put 3 1/2 gallons of water in a bucket. Stir in a tablespoon of sodium
silicate or soda ash. Mix in 17 lbs. of XX Sagger or 9 lbs. OM4 Tennessee
ball clay. Put in a safe place where it won't be moved for a day.
Siphon off the top 1 gallon, including the water off the top. You can
sieve this with 200 mesh sieve if you like. Then, dip it, spray it, or
brush it on.
Please note that workshops fill up very quickly. Register today!
