Saggar Firing Workshop
Sunday, June 29, 2008 10am - 4pm
$45 / 50
Linda
and Charlie Riggs have been to our studios twice to demonstrate how to saggar
fire using several different methods. The photo to the left is an example
of their work.
In this workshop we will apply some of the techniques they generously shared
with us for both potters new to Saggar Firing and those who took the workshop
but haven't had a chance to repeat what they have learned.
Bring three or four modestly sized pieces, we're limited by the size of the
saggars.
I have four saggars ready for the workshop.
Two will hold a pot that is 7 1/2" tall by 5" in diameter.
Another will hold a 5" x 5" pot.
The final saggar is 12" x 12" and will be used to fire many smaller pots at
once.
If you can make a saggar, please bring it along - they only last a few firings.
It could be a cylinder with a lid or simply two large bowls that fit together
rim to rim.
We've found that Soldate-60 is great for making saggars.
We can try the tin-foil saggar technique if anyone has good notes on how to do
that.
Unfortunately, I was busy running down materials for the Riggs workshop and
missed that part.
Small bottle forms work great. The clay should be white or buff.
B-Mix and any porcelain work great. Some potters like to use Soldate-60 or
raku clay. Just make sure to push the grog in with a metal rib when you
form you pieces so they are nice and smooth. Using terra sig and
burnishing is very common but not required. If you would like to learn
more about terra sig, check out the notes on the Horsehair workshop page.
Limited to 6 participants.
