Skill Building Workshop
This workshop will focus on terra sigilata.
Terra Sig was used by the Greeks to make their low-fired pottery more
impervious to water penetration and to impart a beautiful sheen to it without
the use of glaze. Think of the beautiful classical Greek vases with red or
black figures.
Clay takes the form of platelets and, if mixed with water and allowed to
settle, the finest platelets will stay in suspension and can be siphoned off for
application to wheel thrown or hand-built forms. It is then burnished to a
sheen.
We'll learn how to make the sig and various methods of applying it to our
pots.
This workshop will cascade nicely into other low fire techniques such as pit,
saggar, horsehair and raku. Pieces that you bring to this workshop can later
be fired in one of these methods.
Bring two trimmed, leather hard pieces. Of course, you can just come
and watch if you wish.
Limited to 8 participants, sign up early.
